About ISM Leichhardt

A music school built on how children actually learn

For over a decade, families across Sydney's Inner West have trusted ISM Leichhardt to give their children a genuine love of music. From two-year-old Jitterbugs to adult pianists, every class is shaped by the same belief: hear it first, then play it.

Our Story

Rooted in the Inner West, focused on the child in front of us

ISM Leichhardt sits on Level 1 of 35 Norton Street, a short walk from the heart of one of Sydney's most vibrant neighbourhoods. We opened our doors to serve local families who wanted something more than a one-size-fits-all music lesson.

The school operates under the International School of Music framework, a structured, research-informed approach that sequences learning by age and developmental stage. That means no child is pushed ahead before they are ready, and no child is held back once they are.

Our students range from two-year-olds discovering rhythm for the very first time to adults returning to the piano after years away. What every class shares is the same warm, unhurried atmosphere and the same high expectations for genuine musicianship.

The ISM Method

A carefully sequenced approach that mirrors the way children learn language, starting with sound, then meaning, then written form.

Auditory first

Every concept enters through the ears before it appears on paper. Children sing, clap, and move to internalise pitch, rhythm, and phrasing. This is the same instinct that lets a toddler speak in sentences long before they learn the alphabet.

Visual and tactile layering

Once a concept lives in the ear, we introduce its written form. Colour-coded notation, keyboard geography, and hands-on exploration make the connection between what is heard and what is read natural and memorable.

Group dynamics as a learning engine

Playing alongside peers creates a kind of musical conversation. Children hear each other, adjust, listen, and respond. That social energy accelerates learning in ways that solo practice simply cannot replicate.

Age-matched progression

Each program is designed around a specific developmental window. A four-year-old and a ten-year-old need fundamentally different teaching. Our programs reflect that, which is why every child progresses with confidence rather than frustration.

Programs at a glance

From a child's very first class to an adult's private lesson, every step connects to the next.

Age 2

Jitterbugs

The first step. Song, movement, and rhythm games build foundational listening skills in a playful, parent-accompanied setting. Two-year-olds learn through their whole bodies before they ever touch a key.

Age 3

Beeboppers

Building on what Jitterbugs starts, Beeboppers introduces pitch, melody, and early instrument exploration. Three-year-olds begin to connect the sounds they love with the physical act of making them.

Pianorama

The heart of ISM. Pianorama is a multi-year group piano and musicianship program that develops reading, theory, technique, and genuine performance skills. Students move through carefully graded levels at the pace of the group, with plenty of room to shine individually.

What we believe about music education

These are the ideas that shape every class we teach and every decision we make about how to run the school.

Sound before symbol

A child who hears music deeply will read it fluently. We never rush notation at the expense of the ear.

The right class at the right age

Developmental readiness matters. A program designed for a six-year-old is wrong for a nine-year-old, and vice versa.

A place children want to return to

If a child dreads their lesson, nothing else matters. Joy and enthusiasm are outcomes we measure as seriously as technique.

Partnership with families

Parents are the most important part of a child's musical journey. We keep communication open and honest at every stage.

Long-term thinking

We are not building performers for a concert in six weeks. We are building musicians for life. That takes patience and a clear plan.

Structure that sets you free

A well-designed curriculum is not a cage. It is a ladder. Clear structure gives children the confidence to explore, experiment, and express.
